They do have some very good metal based presets, though it's a bit 80's/grainy to me. Their MIDI control is a mess and very crappy compared to the other 3 applications. It also responds and feels the most organic out of all of the apps out there.Īmplitube has a pretty good collection of plugins, but they are kind of pricey when you start looking to get the whole collection. Imagine being able to tweak any real amp you want without the chance of it blowing up. It's insane how deep you can get and it's a little bit on the geeky side. The other thing that makes this a favorite for me is that you can get inside of the virtual amps and tweak the values of almost any component in there.
If you don't know what that is look up convolution modelling or impule responses and in a few minutes you'll realize just how important and amazing this is. I also like the fact that he utilized and integrated impulse responses into the application itself. IMHO it's probably the one that feels the most like a real amp. I have a soft spot for this one because I was a beta tester for a long time and the guy who wrote the program is way cool and really listened to us. I prefer it because it's easy, I have my favorite sounds and I have gotten pretty good at tweaking it and I've got a MIDI foot controller that does all kinds of extra for me. It does a lot of stuff pretty good, but I don't think that any of them are the greatest ever. If you want the best clean or best dirt sound ever it's probably going to come up just a bit short IMHO. There are also a very large number of patches and stuff from other users all over the internet. It's a very well proven platform and has a lot of usable sounds. Guitar Rig 3 is probably the most stable and easiest to use and most versatile of the bunch. I've already told you what I liked about GTR3 so I won't get into that anymore. For jamming with backing tracks you can't beat it with any of the other apps listed here. Guitar Rig 3 is great for this because not only can you play a file along with what you play, but you can record what you play with that audio in these little virtual tape decks.
Well the file player function I was talking about is the ability to play along with an audio track within the standalone application.
